Part 5 of 6—“Make Room!”
I bet you thought this was all going to be easy! Well, it’s simple, but it’s definitely not easy. These are big changes and they require EVERY single Trick I can offer you to really integrate into your life! Consider what you are trying to do: 1) Change your self-concept with the creation of your Fitness Avatar; 2) Cultivate a more Mindful approach to your health, fitness, and future; 3) Be truly Honest about what is holding you back or hindering your progress; and 4) Eat Lean and Green, no matter what the culinary circumstances! What a tall order!! But as soon as you include these tricks in your life for a few weeks, they will become second nature. It won’t seem as awkward to choose the broccoli instead of the steak fries if you’ve already done it a few times!
It’s time to talk about time. As your personal trainer, that is the most important component in my professional life. I charge for my time, not by the workout or by the pound lost. My time and my expertise are what I have to offer you. And once you understand how time, and the amount of time you put into your dreams and goals, affects your results, you will understand how precious it is.
I am not suggesting that you spend ALL your time working out, or making sure that every morsel that goes into your mouth is organic and healthy. We all have to make a living, maintain our relationships, take care of our loved ones, etc. But too many of us DON’T make the time needed for fitness and good health a real priority. So here is my next strong suggestion:
Trick #5: Schedule Your Workouts!
That’s right, put them on the calendar, just like you do meetings for work or an appointment at the dentist. Your workouts should go on your calendar and STAY there, unless it’s an emergency. A sick child, a car breakdown, a massive shake-up at work—ok, maybe you can skip it for the day. But so many people use any excuse not to work out, things like getting stuck in traffic or running too many errands or any other day-to-day necessity. You MUST make the time to work out, because it’s important to be consistent and you will not see results if you don’t.
It doesn’t matter when you work out, morning, noon, or evening. Your body really doesn’t care, as long as it gets to move and exert itself! (One caveat: you shouldn’t work out too close to bedtime as it might keep you awake.) However, most people who work out first thing in the morning stay consistent because they don’t schedule anything else at 6 a.m.! I like to get my workout in nice and early, it’s a great feeling to know that I have accomplished it for the day and now I am ready to tackle anything else that comes my way!
If you are eating really well, this could make an important difference in how successful you are. After all, when you are trying to lose weight, that calorie deficit is what makes the difference! It’s often as simple as Calories In, Calories Out, and you want to make sure you are fueling your body well, the way it was designed to be fueled. And if you don’t have time for an hour, take 30 minutes, or even 20. Just move your body and be consistent.
Put your workout in the schedule, and stick to the schedule.
