I’m not a gambler. I have never been to Las Vegas, and the few times I’ve been in a casino I was happy just to break even and walk away. I don’t like to take a risk when the outcome is so doubtful. The truth is, most people who gamble don’t win–according to a 2013 article in the Wall Street Journal, only 11% of people who frequent casinos actually end up in the black. The odds are rarely in your favor.
The same idea can be applied to your health. What would your life be like, you may wonder, if you took the risk and made the commitment to sleek down and shape up? Would it take too much time, money, and energy for you to handle? Is your life too busy, too complicated, too demanding for you to sustain the necessary changes? Do you feel that the odds against you are so daunting that you would prefer not to take the risk at all? If so, you’re not alone.
I’m not going to lie to you. It can be difficult to lose weight and get in shape. It takes hard work and self-discipline. It takes looking at your life as it is with honesty and courage, and being willing to choose a different path. But I’m willing to bet that you have the grit and determination to succeed, and here’s why: if you can make a plan, and stick to it, the payoff is spectacular.
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel, you don’t need to train for the Olympics, and you don’t need to go on a diet that consists of sawdust and celery. You do need planning, consistency, and accountability–in other words, a “recipe for success.” If you have reasonable, time-bound goals with a meal plan and a training schedule, most of the risk is removed from the process up-front. Make the plan, stick to the plan, repeat. All you have to do is lace up your cross-trainers and show up.
Sounds easy, right? Simple, as some friends of mine like to say, but NOT easy. And to paraphrase the poet, life can get in the way of our best-laid plans. So what is the missing ingredient that will guarantee your success?
